OIL PAINTING OF INDIAN BLANKET FLOWER

INDIAN BLANKET FLOWER SOLD
7 X 5 OIL ON PANEL
These cheerful little flowers are easily grown in the south. I planted them in my garden once and they over ran everything else.
About the background in my paintings, they vary quite a bit depending on the colors of the subject matter. In any painting the background needs to be either lighter or darker than the flower (or whatever). Of course this one is darker and I chose warm umbers and ochers (for harmony and a general warm overtone). To keep it from being flat and monotonous I put in some yellow-greens (a complementary color) and some of the magenta color of the flower.
Occasionally I have an overwhelming urge to splash on a color like bright purple (or orange) in the background. I am not sure if this is divine guidance or a bad case of purple-itis. Usually you can tell the difference by the end result.

Obviously, I found the orange tube of paint, but I am very happy with this painting. It was one of those that everything worked immediately. I love that!

OIL PAINTING OF FAMILY'S FIRST DIP AT THE OCEAN

FAMILY TIME AT THE SEASIDE
6 X 6 OIL ON PANEL
On this painting, I was playing with grays, warm against cool. The only strong color play is in the simplified shapes of the mom's swimsuit. For me, this was an exercise in restraint, as I love to throw in all the color I can, usually. When working this way, values are extremely important.

OIL PAINTING OF BALLERINA BLUES

BALLERINA BLUES
7 X 5 OIL ON PANEL
After painting on a larger scale for several days, it was really tough switching back to the smaller scale paintings. I decided to lay off the reds in this one and shoot for a cooler painting. I think it has kind of a nice dreamy quality. What do you think?

OIL SKETCH OF BEAUTIFUL BALLERINA

OIL SKETCH OF BALLERINA
19 x 10 (IMAGE) OIL ON UNSTRETCHED CANVAS
We had a wonderful model, Andrea, for my figure painting workshop! She was an absolute joy to paint. I will post more photos tomorrow of the workshop artist and model.
I photographed this painting several times but still could not get the freshness of the actual painting. This painting is on canvas with enough canvas border to put on stretcher bars.

BIRTHDAY YELLOW ROSES

BIRTHDAY ROSES SOLD
6 X 6 OIL ON PANEL
I got these lovely roses for my birthday and I have really enjoyed their beautiful colors.
As I have said before, I think flowers are difficult to paint. Also, for me, orange is a hard color to deal with. I am going to do myself a favor and hide the tube of orange.
Tomorrow, I will be teaching a figure painting workshop in Foley, Alabama. I am really excited about that as we have a ballerina modeling for us. It is going to be so much fun!

BIG MAMA AND THE GULLS SOLD
29.5 X 10 OIL ON GALLERY WRAPPED CANVAS
Sea gulls are so much fun to paint. They seem to have there own individual personalities. I am not sure whether this should be classified as semi-abstract or funky impressionism!!

INDIGO BUNTING DONNING HIS SPRING WARDROBE

INDIGO BUNTING SOLD
6 X 6 OIL ON PANEL
This is one of the beautiful birds I photographed in Fort Morgan, Alabama at the spring bird banding. It was a joy to behold so many different lovely birds there. Bob Sargent and his crew put up fine little nets to catch the migrating birds, then band, record and release them. They tell us all kinds of amazing bird facts. I will be sure to attend this event in the fall also.

BIRD BANDING IN FORT MORGAN, ALABAMA

Bob Sargent, who heads up the bird banding identified my mystery bird at a mere glance finally!!! It is a NUTMEG MANNIKIN. This bird is from southeast Asia, and arrived here as caged birds.

I had a wonderful opportunity to photograph all kinds of birds at the spring bird banding at Fort Morgan Alabama.
